Travelling to and around Lille

By train, you can travel to Lille from Paris, London or Brussels, none of those trips taking more than one hour and a half.
It is great to walk in Lille and take in the scenery but if you want to get somewhere quickly, you can take the subway or bus.

#1 Lille OSC

Watch 2010/11 Ligue 1 champions Lille OSC at the
Stade Borne de l'Espoir. Enjoy stars such as Eden Hazard (pictured) and Gervinho play quality football.

#2 Laser Game Evolution

Playing laser tag is a great way to enjoy your time with friends. Make sure to book early though.

#3 Euralille Mall

This is an absolutely MASSIVE shopping centre that has lots of designer shops at ok prices. You'll be in there for ages.

#4 Parc de Zoologique (zoo)

A nifty little zoo with a great variety of animals. And best of all, it's free!

#5 Marche Wazzemes

This place has absolutely everything. It runs on Tuesday, Thursday but mostly on Sunday. It has things from fresh fruit to chairs to clocks to plants and firewood. It's all extremely cheap too. Don't get lost though.

#6 Kinepolis

Perhaps after a fish spa or a delicious meal at La Cant'In you could go watch a movie. Kinepolis is a massive theater the middle of Lille.

#7 Eat!

As you might have seen in my "Top five restaurants and cafes" section, Lille has some incredible food whether it be waffles or slow cooked lamb, Lille will probably have it.

#8 Fish Spa

It gets pretty busy in Lille so why not relax at a fish spa? Not heard of a fish spa before? I didn't think so. You dip your bare feet into a tank full of Garra rufa fish. Pretty cool huh? After your 25 minutes or longer, your feet are clean and refreshed. You can also receive a foot massage or a nail polish.

#9 La Piscine Museum

This is pretty cool, a museum filled with many decorations including loads of statues and the coolest bit is the massive pool running down the centre of the museum.
Shame you can't swim in the pool though....

#10 La Citadelle

This structure was built in the 17th century for the defense of Lille. It is extremely cleverly built as no enemy soldiers can enter the structure without having someone firing at them from a wall nearby.

Top ten things to do in Lille

I had such a hard time choosing a top ten because Lille has so many attractions but here is what I came up with. :)

#1, Meert Patisserie

ATTENTION EVERYONE WITH A SWEET TOOTH!
Meert Patisserie has pastry, chocolate, tea and coffee, Meert specializes in all things dessert. An excellent little place that has existed since 1971. The price is a let down though, very expensive but definitely worth it!

#2, Creperie Beaurepaire

You can't go to France without having crepes and in Lille, the Creperie Beaurepaire is the best place to enjoy them. A cosy place in the heart of Lille has crepes sweet and savoury at a good price.

#3 La Bottega

The best pizzeria in Lille! Quality pizza at a low price. Awesome crust and loads of topping. You just can't beat pizza!

#4, A L'Huitriere

A L'Huitriere received a Michelin Star in 2007 and it deserves it! Delicious, fresh seafood with oysters being a specialty. The building is not that old either! Watch the price though, it's a little on the high-side.

#5, La Cant'In

La Cant'In, a little restaurant in the middle of Lille. Superb food, excellent service but make sure to book.

Top Five Cafes And Restaurants

My assignment outline does not tell me to do a top five of cafes and restaurants but Lille has such great food that i decided to do it anyway!

Bon Appetit!!!

The History of Lille

It is unsure of the origin of Lille but the most common theory is the legend of "Lyderic and Phineart."
Around the year 620, the prince of Dijon and his wife were traveling in the soon to be city of Lille. They fell into a trap laid by the lord of the land, Phineart. The prince of Dijon died in the trap, but his wife got away, stumbling across a hermit's hut, she passed away while giving birth. The hermit raised the child, naming him Lyderic. As Lyderic grew up, he learnt about his parents and their causes of death. Lyderic hunted down Phineart and killed him in a duel. The land was passed on to Lyderic. He ruled in 640.

Lille was once called L'isle which came from a Latin word word meaning "island" because it was once marshy.
Lille struggled a lot during World War I and World War II. In World War I, Lille tricked the Germans by convincing them that they had a lot more artillery than was really true. Once the Germans realised they were tricked, they responded by burning more than 2,200 houses and buildings.
In World War, II the Germans invaded Lille forcing many residents to flee.

Lille

Lille is the capital of Nord-Pas de Calais, a region in northern France.

It is the 4th largest city in France.

My assignment is to guide teenage travelers to the best sites that the city has to offer.

Enjoy!
